I have noisy neighbours. What can I do?

There are a bunch of noisy students who just moved in next door to me. They play loud music on weeknights and have loud conversations late at night. I haven’t yet contacted them as I’m not sure whether to go straight to the landlord or rental agency or police.

  • Firstly you should talk to your neighbours and try to resolve the problem.
  • You can also contact the landlord or rental agency and see whether they can make the neighbours be quiet.
  • If you cannot resolve the problem the police and your local council may be able to assist.
  • It is an offence to cause unreasonable noise from any residential property and loud music late at night is likely to be considered unreasonable.
  • You may need to record a ‘noise diary’ for a few weeks and write a statement regarding your experiences to establish that the noise is unreasonable.
