How many dogs can I own?

I own 2 cats and 2 dogs and wish to purchase one more dog. My neighbour has warned me that there are limits on how many pets you can own and that those limits are set by the local government. Is this true? How can I find out this information? I am in Ballarat.

  • Yes. It is true that local governments often put limits on how many pets you can own.
  • The limits are different for those living in rural areas.
  • You can check your local government’s website which will likely have links to ‘animals’ and the various rules related to animal ownership. Otherwise phone them or visit them and ask.
  • In Ballarat the limit is for two dogs and two cats per household.
