Do I need a lawyer to go to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT)?

I want to appeal my local government’s decision to not issue a planning permit for my house extension. This is of significant importance to me so I want to ensure I present my best case. Should I get a lawyer?

  • You generally represent yourself at VCAT as it is a more informal forum than court and does not encourage lawyers acting for parties.
  • You may wish to engage a lawyer to give you advice before you go to VCAT and if you are really concerned have them represent you.
