What is an alcohol consumption zone?

We are organising a school fete with a lot of indoor and outdoor activities. We have been approved a liquor licence where we can serve alcohol in consumption zones. What exactly is a consumption zone?

  • The consumption of liquor must be done in a designated area. These areas will have one or more serving points. These serving points need to be clearly defined.
    • If the consumption zone is situated outdoors then you must install temporary or permanent fencing of no less than one metre.
    • For example an outdoor consumption zone could adjoin a clubhouse or it may be located on a certain part of a sporting field.
    • If the consumption zone is indoors you will need to clearly state which building or area is being used. You can have indoor consumption zones in a range of areas such as:
      • a conference room;
      • school hall; or
      • a multi-purpose type room.
  • Your application must provide details such as the measurements of the consumption zone. If you need more than one consumption zone then patrons are not permitted to move between these areas if they are in possession of alcohol.
  • You will need to make sure there are signs that tell patrons:
    • your approved trading hours;
    • the extent of the area where they are allowed to drink; and
    • that they are not allowed to take alcohol outside of the zone.
