In what situations will my organisation be exempt from requiring a liquor licence?

I work at a not-for-profit organisation. We want to do a fundraising event in the lead up to Christmas to raise funds for refugees. We want to have an event where we serve dinner from different countries and auction donations to raise money. It would be good if people could also have a glass of wine with their meal. Would we be exempt from getting a licence?

  • You will need to check the law in your state or territory but it is likely that your event would be exempt.
  • Generally it is unlikely that a non-profit organisation that wants to hold a risk-free fundraising event would need to apply for a community liquor licence to supply or sell alcohol for a one off event.
  • There are common criteria that your will need to fulfil before you will be exempt such as:
    • that the money raised is used for the benefit of the community;
    • that serving alcohol is not your main way of raising money;
    • that you will not be serving alcohol after midnight; and
    • that you will not be serving alcohol for more than 8 hours.
