Are there any restrictions to the sale of alcohol at exempt events?

We are having a fundraising event next week. We meet the criteria for an exemption and so do not need a licence to serve alcohol. Are there rules about how to do this?

  • Yes there are rules about the sale of alcohol at an exempt event.
  • You will need to check the law in your state or territory but there are some common rules such as:
    • alcohol must be sold by someone over 18 years of age;
    • alcohol must be served in an open container and it must be drunk at the event;
    • the sale of alcohol should not create an unsafe environment;
    • alcohol must not be supplied or sold in a manner that promotes quick or excessive drinking; and
    • alcohol must not be supplied or sold to:
      • disorderly or intoxicated patrons or
      • to children.
