Can I keep my client file?

I had a legal matter that was completed two months ago. I wanted to keep my client file as a record of the matter. Can I ask my lawyer to give me the file?

  • Yes. Provided you have paid your lawyer’s legal fees you have full entitlement to your client file.
  • If you fail to pay your legal fees your lawyer is allowed to hold the file until you pay.
  • Your lawyer may keep any file notes and other documents that have been prepared for your benefit.
