What should I do when I arrive at court?

I have never been inside a court and am very nervous about my divorce hearing. I do not have a lawyer representing me. What should I do?

  • It is a good idea to get to court at least 20 minutes earlier than the time written on your court papers.
  • When you get to court find out which courtroom you are in and what your case number is. Then let the court staff know that you have arrived. They may be able to give you a bit more information about the running of the list on that particular day.
  • Try to sit near the correct courtroom so that you will hear your case when it is called.
  • When your case is called you can go into court. If you are representing yourself then you can sit at the bar table. If you have a lawyer he or she will sit at the bar table and you will sit behind or nearby.
