Do I have to sign consent orders?

My partner is pressuring me into signing consent orders. I do not agree with a lot of the things that he has written and do not think it is a fair division. What can I do?

  • Coming to an agreement will usually require some give and take. However if you are having trouble negotiating or you are feeling pressured then you should reach out for help.
  • You may like to start with the assistance of a counsellor or mediator to help you to communicate in a neutral and safe environment.
  • Family Dispute Resolution Practitioners (FDRPs) are specially trained in mediation for family law issues. You can find one in your area by searching the Attorney-General’s register of accredited FDRPs: http://www.fdrr.ag.gov.au/Search.aspx.
  • If you still have concerns you should get legal advice so you fully understand your rights and can ensure your interests are protected. In many cases your lawyer can assist you with the negotiation process so there is no need to go to court.
