I do not feel my lawyer is helping me enough. What can I do?

I am trying to get my kids back home with me. They’ve been living in foster care for 6 months and it’s time for them to come home. I’ve got a lawyer but he doesn’t seem to understand how important this is to me. I try to talk to him about how much I miss them but all he cares about is the court process.

Lawyer Answers (1): Answers from lawyers are general preliminary responses. They are not formal legal advice and cannot taken account of all your circumstances. They do not create a lawyer–client relationship.
  • The first thing to do is to talk to your lawyer about your concerns.
  • Try to explain what is bothering you and what you need. Do you need more information? Are you having trouble understanding things? Do you need a support person?
  • If you still feel unhappy with your lawyer you can change your lawyer. It is best to find a new lawyer who is happy to represent you before you sack your current lawyer.
  • If you have a Legal Aid lawyer this may not be very easy. You will need to find out the Legal Aid Department’s processes in this situation.
