Can I claim compensation for property that was stolen from me?

I was the victim of a robbery and the items that were stolen were valued at $10,000. Can I apply for compensation through victims’ compensation?

  • No. Victims’ compensation schemes generally operate to provide monetary compensation for physical or emotional injury or for monetary losses which stem from those primary injuries.
  • They are not available to compensate for loss to property.
  • You can talk to a lawyer about recovering your losses from the offender through the civil law. However this will depend on whether the offender has enough assets to make litigation worthwhile.
