Is it illegal to set off fireworks?

We saw some fireworks in a shop yesterday and bought them. We have a big party coming up for Northern Territory Day. It is in the bush away from people and shops. We want to set them off. Is it illegal?

  • In nearly all states and territories it is an offence to set off fireworks without a permit.
  • Fireworks are defined and classified by the relevant laws. Sparklers and party poppers are often classified as fireworks. These items are obviously available in shops and you do not need a permit.
  • The legislation also clarifies:
    •  the types of fireworks that are illegal; and
    •  those that can be bought and used in certain circumstances with a valid permit.
  • The Northern Territory has an exception to these rules on one day each year. During certain hours on Northern Territory Day (1 July) people are allowed to buy and use fireworks for personal use in the Northern Territory. Remember the law is always changing so you should check what the current law is before acting.
