Will youth detention affect school?

My son has been sentenced to a control order and will now spend 1 year in a juvenile detention centre. I am concerned about him falling behind in school. Will my child be able to sit his final year 10 exams while in detention?

  • If your son is under 16 he will be required to complete his schooling whilst in detention.
  • Juvenile detention centres operate schools and employ staff to teach offenders. They cover all levels of schooling including preparation for final exams and higher school certificates.
  • If your son wishes to learn a trade a wide range of vocational training options will also be available to him in order to prepare him for life outside of the detention centre.
  • The objective is to equip offenders with the skills needed to rehabilitate themselves so that they might be less inclined to reoffend once they are released.
