What if I tried but did not succeed in committing a deception offence?

Recently I tried to buy some stereo equipment on finance. It was a spur of the moment thing and in the loan application I exaggerated my income. I didn’t get the finance so I never ended up buying the equipment. Could I still be charged with fraud?

  • You may still be charged with an attempt to commit the offence of obtaining property by deception.
  • Where a person deceives someone with the intention of obtaining property through a deceptive loan application but fails to do so they may be guilty of an attempt.
