A few months ago I started getting extra money in my pension. I wasn’t sure why but I didn’t follow it up with Centrelink. Recently Centrelink contacted me and said that I’ve been overpaid and they want the money back. They also say they want to interview me. Can I just repay the money without being charged with fraud?

- No. Social security fraud is very serious and governed by federal legislation.
- Depending on the nature of the benefit you were receiving it may not be sufficient for the overpayment to simply be repaid.
- It is very important that you keep copies of all correspondence with Centrelink and keep notes of all telephone conversations.
- When reporting your income be as accurate as possible. If you discover any inaccuracies tell Centrelink immediately.
