What happens if I am granted bail at an extradition hearing and then I do not turn up to court when required?

I have been arrested under a warrant issued in New Zealand for indecent assault. My lawyer says I have a good chance of getting bail at the extradition hearing and I would then have to make my own way to New Zealand for the hearing. What will happen if I just don’t turn up in New Zealand?

  • You must attend court on the date and location specified in the bail document provided to you at the extradition hearing.
  • If you do not a warrant will be issued for your arrest.
  • You will most likely be imprisoned and held in custody until you can be surrendered to police from the country who applied for your extradition.
  • They will then escort you to that country where you will be imprisoned until your trial.
