Can I be extradited from one state or territory to another for a minor offence?

I am 19. I went joyriding with some friends in a stolen car after my farewell party and the driver crashed it. No-one was injured and we ran away. Soon after that I moved interstate with my parents. I was too embarrassed to tell them what happened. My friend just emailed to say we had been identified and a magistrate had issued a warrant for me. Will the police come and get me?

  • Yes. Provided a valid warrant exists that warrant may be enforced in another state.
  • You do not have to have been convicted of the offence before you can be extradited.
  • Nor does it have to be a serious offence.
  • All that is required is that charges have been filed.
  • There is no requirement of proof that the person is guilty of the crime alleged.
  • You had best tell your parents the truth about what happened and get legal representation.
