Do I need permission to install security grills?

I want to install grills on my apartment windows for additional security. These grills will be visible from the façade of the building.

  • Yes. As you are in an apartment it is likely that you are part of a subsidiary strata scheme.
  • The outside of the building in a strata scheme is common property. Prior to making any changes to common property you must ask permission of your strata scheme’s owners corporation.
  • You will also need to look at your community’s management statement regarding this issue. Occasionally the community’s management statement may list rules regarding changes to common property in subsidiary schemes.
  • In the event of any inconsistency the community management statement always prevails.
