What does travel insurance cover?

I'm going on my first trip overseas and I'll be taking my iphone, camera and laptop. Are these types of things covered against theft or damage while I'm overseas?

  • Whether those items are covered will depend upon the travel insurance agreement that you have entered into. Each insurer and insurance package is different so it is really important that you consider your needs prior to purchasing travel insurance.
  • You also need to read the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) carefully to see if there are any limitations, exclusions or get-out clauses set by the insurer.
  • Generally travel insurance can cover a range of expenses in the event of unforeseen events happening on your trip including:
    • medical expenses for injury or illness;
    • theft of valuables;
    • damage to baggage; and
    • cancellations or interruptions to flight plans.
  • Sometimes travel insurance policies may cover electrical items up to a certain amount. If you need extra coverage for expensive items you should check with your travel insurance company first and get their confirmation in writing. You may also need to provide receipts or photos of the items to prove that you actually did take them overseas and they were actually stolen or damaged.
  • It is also worth noting that you may not receive the full value of the items back from your travel insurer. Even if the travel insurance company accepts your claim they will usually account for depreciation and general wear and tear and award you a compensation amount accordingly.
  • You should discuss this with your travel insurance provider before you leave.
