What activities will my travel insurance cover?

I want to do some hiking in Nepal and I might be at altitudes of over 3000 metres. It can be cold and dangerous and if things go wrong you can need medical care and even evacuation. Is it possible to get cover for extreme activities like this?

  • Travel insurance can be suited to cover a range of activities but you must advise the insurer prior to travel.
  • The wording of your policy is the key. Some policies will refuse to cover you for some extreme sports or outdoor activities especially where they involve a high degree of danger. You should check the specific wording relating to hiking activities. Some policies might list 'hiking' as one of the activities that are covered but you might then find that it is only covered up to 3000 metres. You might need to pay an additional premium to get better cover than this.
  • You should obtain the clarification from your policy provider in writing before you purchase.
