This is my first trip overseas. I am really excited but want to make sure that I am being sensible too. I have purchased by tickets and my travel insurance and I have read the PDS. What else should I do before I leave and while I am away to prevent my holiday going wrong?

- There are things you can do before you leave home to make things easier if something goes wrong and you need to make a claim on your travel insurance.
- A good place to start is by making a list while you are packing. Write down all the things you are taking with you that you would be upset to lose or have stolen.
- Include serial numbers and take photographs of expensive items.
- Collect your receipts and credit card statements showing when and where these items were purchased and how much you paid for them.
- Obtain a current valuation for specialty items like jewellery.
- Leave all this information at home with someone who will be able to access it for you if you need to make a claim.
- While you are away you can help to protect your valuables by:
- carrying them with you or storing them in the hotel safe;
- keeping your belongings in sight and within arm’s reach at all times;
- keep a firm hold on your belongings particularly at times when you are otherwise distracted; and
- never leave expensive belongings in a public place including:
- on the beach while you swim;
- on your chair or table at a restaurant; or
- with a stranger or a person you have only just met.
