I purchased a microwave oven which turned out to be defective. It caused a large fire resulting in extensive damage to my house. Is the manufacturer liable for the damage to buildings and fixtures as a result of the safety defect?

- Yes. The liability of a manufacturer for their defective product extends to damage caused to a house. The manufacturer will have to compensate you for destruction or damage that you can prove was caused by the defective product.
- You should contact your local consumer protection agency to seek advice on how to make a complaint against the manufacturer or supplier and also seek legal guidance about how to initiate proceedings for compensation.
