Can I claim compensation even though I now live overseas?

Twenty years ago I worked in a factory in NSW where I was exposed to asbestos dust while working as boilermaker. After working for 5 years I contracted asbestosis and had to stop work. I later moved overseas with my family where my condition progressively deteriorated. Can I claim compensation in NSW and receive benefits?

  • It is important to understand that living in Australia is not a pre-requisite to making a claim. If you were exposed to asbestos in Australia and as a consequence developed asbestosis you can still make a claim.
  • You will have to meet the same requirements as a person living in NSW and lodge the application in the Dust Diseases Board and the Dust Diseases Tribunal according to your needs.
  • You should speak to a lawyer in NSW regarding the procedure of bringing your claim for compensation.
